Transformation, memory and awareness
The Shadow Line is Gianni Denitto's quintet project inspired by Joseph Conrad's novel of the same name. At its centre is the shadow line, the moment when something changes and there is no turning back. It is the threshold between enthusiasm and awareness, between who we are and who we are not yet.
The project begins with a personal experience and develops a narrative in which every listener can recognise part of their own journey. The core instrumentation comprises trumpet, trombone, alto saxophone, double bass and drums. When appropriate, the ensemble can be expanded with a harmonic instrument and/or percussion.
The concert brings together five pieces from The Shadow Line and two compositions connected to outward journeys and encounters between cultures, Sarajevo and Suresh. Alongside Gianni Denitto are four young talents from the Italian jazz scene. The exchange between different experiences and perspectives becomes an essential part of the quintet's sound.
